A family’s cries for justice go unheard

LAHORE, June 13: A family from Uch Sharif, living in a camp along a road here, has been running from pillar to post for justice for the last 11 months or so despite apprising Supreme Court Chief Justice Iftikhar Mohammad Chaudhry, Lahore High Court Chief Justice Khwaja Muhammad Sharif and Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif of its ordeal. Stepbrothers refused to give Rajab Hussain Kalhora his due share in moveable and immovable property of their father Ashiq Hussain in the first week of May last year. He lodged a complaint with area police, but his stepbrothers Zahid, Shahid and Nasir and their six accomplices subjected him and his wife to torture and forced them to leave Hataiji city of Ahmadpur tehsil along with their four children. Rajab came to Lahore along with his family and set up a camp on a footpath near the Lahore Press Club in mid-May last year. “I had a meeting with Justice Chaudhry who, during his visit to Lahore, referred my case to the Lahore High Court chief justice. I explained my case to Justice Sharif and he promised me justice. “Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif during his Bahawalpur visit on July 22 last year directed the district police officer to redress my grievances within three days. I again met Shahbaz Sharif in Lahore on Feb 8 this year in Lahore and he promised to get me my legal right. “My father owned 14 shops and two department stores worth of Rs30 million, fertiliser and pesticides business worth of Rs250 million, 12 plots worth of Rs30 million, a bungalow worth of Rs8 million, Rs6.3 million in bank and National Savings accounts and 100 acres of agriculture land at Yazman, Ahmadpur Sharqia and Uch Sharif, but I am on the road, bringing food from the shrine of Bibian Pak Daman three times a day and meeting other needs with the alms passers-by give to my children,” says Rajab, who attempted suicide some time ago along with his family, but was rescued by some God-fearing people.

AHMEDPUREAST: US Consulate General Lahore Ms Carmela Conroy today visited Shamas Mahal Uch sharif where Sajjada Nasheen Uch Sharif Makhdoom Syed Iftikhar Hassan Gillani MPA hosted a lunch in her honour. Public Affairs Officer US Consulate Jamie Dragon, DDOR AhmedpurEast, Ex-Tehsil Nazim City Bahawalpur and Ex-Union Nazim Uch were also present on this occasion. Earlier Syed Iftikhar Hassan Gillani showed spiritual relics to US Consulate General Ms Carmela Conroy and other US diplomats. Sajjada Nasheen opened the boxes of relics containing foot print of Prophet Mohammad (PBHH), Sword of Hazrat Ali (RA)used in Khyber War, Tasbeeh of Sheikh Abdul Qadir Jeelani (RA)tooth of Hazrat Owais Qarni (RA) historical manuscripts of Quran Sharif and Darood Sharif of Gillani family.

Murder of Ahmadi in Uch Sharif

According to Punjab Newsline India "Muhammad Azim Tahir of Uch Sharif in Pakistan was martyred on 26 September 2009 in the presence of his wife and daughter. Tahir was returning from a family wedding on his motorbike at 8.30pm when two unknown persons brandishing a firearm forced him to stop his vehicle. In the confusion, Tahir, his wife and daughter, fell from the motorbike. As Tahir went to help his family the assailants stopped him and pointed a gun towards him. Tahir pleaded with them to take whatever they wanted and to leave him and his family alone but as he said this one of the assailants shot him in the temple and he died on the spot in sight of his wife and daughter. The assailants fled the scene. Muhammad Azim Tahir was killed simply because he was an Ahmadi . He is survived by his wife, two sons and daughter. Uch Sharif: School teacher tortured students arrested

UCH SHARIF: A school teacher tortured two brothers in government primary school in moza Bakhtyari in Uch Sharif has been arrested. According to sources, a school teacher Ijaz Ahmed brutally tortured Fayyaz Ahmed, student of class I and his brother Sajjad Ahmed of class III in primary school Majeedabad. Police registered a report and arrested Ijaz Ahmed late on Friday night from his home. The arrested teacher has denied the charges of torture. On the other hand, deputy education officer Hanif Anjum has suspended the Ijaz Ahmed ordered inquiry of the incident under supervision of assistant education officer Syed Sajjad Hussain Bukhari. Lawyers, political workers and civil society playing exemplary role for revival of judiciary: CM

LAHORE: Punjab Chief Minister, Muhammad Shahbaz Sharif has granted approval to construction of roads, improvement of library and installation of a water filtration plant in District Courts Bahawalpur. He directed Commissioner Bahawalpur to submit him a report regarding lawyers’ colony in Bahawalpur within three days. He further directed him that a comprehensive report should be submitted to him as soon as possible after reviewing problems of bars of all districts of Bahawalpur division. He issued these instructions while talking to office-bearers of bar associations of Bahawalpur division, at Circuit House, Bahawalpur, Wednesday. Provincial Minister for Special Education Malik Muhammad Iqbal Channar, Chairman Taskforce Samiullah Chaudhary, Members National and Provincial Assemblies and office-bearers of bar associations of all the three districts of the division and Muslim League Lawyers Forum were present on the occasion. The Chief Minister while talking to the lawyers, congratulated them on restoration of independent judiciary. He said that lawyers, political workers and civil society had played an exemplary role for the revival of judiciary and it is his earnest desire that justice is upheld and the goal of progress and prosperity of the country is achieved. He said that he considers problems of Bahawalpur as his own and no effort will be spared for their solution. He said that government is attaching top priority to the development and uplift of backward areas and in this connection development projects worth billions of rupees have been initiated in Southern Punjab. He said that foundation stone of a 300-bed civil hospital, drug testing laboratory, veterinary college and hospital, working women hall and crafts bazaar in Bahawalpur as well as northern and southern bye-pass has been laid. He said that a huge amount will be spent on these projects and their completion will result in development of the area and provision of better facilities to the masses. He directed that the problem regarding lawyers’ chambers in Tehsil Yazman should be resolved within two days. The lawyers apprised the Chief Minister of their problems while later a woman complainant from Uch Sharif brought her problem to the notice of the Chief Minister upon which he directed DPO to take immediate action and submit him a report within two days. Development projects in Bahawalpur: Punjab CM orders body to report in three days

* Shahbaz appoints Bahawalpur Division commissioner as focal person for projects Staff Report LAHORE: Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif has sought a report from a high-level committee within three days on a number of proposed projects in the education, health, agriculture, livestock, tourism and urban development sectors in Bahawalpur. Political Adviser to CM Muhammad Baligur Rehman proposed a number of development projects in Bahawalpur during his meeting with the chief minister on Sunday. The proposals included setting up of a university for women and a veterinary college, constructing the new building of the women’s polytechnic college and a district headquarters hospital, developing an industrial area on the pattern of the Sundar Industrial Estate and establishing a model cattle and sheep market. Rehman also suggested a number of proposals for the development of Bahawalpur city as well as promotion of tourism, which included conservation and renovation of Drawar Fort, Uch Sharif shrines, palaces and a zoo, and arranging a jeep rally. He also proposed restoration of the sites allocated for public parks, improvement of Lal Sohanra Park, setting up of showrooms for the promotion of local handicrafts, revival of the Bahawalpur Development Authority and establishment of two model police stations. The chief minister had appointed the Bahawalpur division commissioner as focal person for the projects and directed the Health, Industries, Livestock and Dairy Development, Higher Education, Information, Culture and Youth Affairs (IC&YA), Technical Education and Vocational Training Authority (TEVTA), Commutation and Works and Irrigation secretaries, and Tourism and Capital Development Authority (CDA) managing directors to visit Bahawalpur within three days and submit a detailed report regarding implementation of the projects. The CM had also asked Punjab Minister for Special Education Malik Muhammad Iqbal Chunhar, members of National Assembly Baligur Rehman, and Saood Majeed, members of Punjab Assembly Chaudhry Muhammad Ahmad Jajja, Haji Zulfiqar Ali, Malik Jehanzeb Waran and Task Force Chairman Samiullah Chaudhry to remain present in Bahawalpur during the next three days so that they could be consulted regarding development projects. 40 activists of banned outfits arrested in Punjab

In a crackdown on June 18, the Bahawalpur and Vehari Police arrested 40 people who allegedly remained associated with banned outfits and sectarian groups, Dawn reported. Raids were reportedly conducted in Bahawalpur, Ahmedpur East, Hasilpur, Khairpur Tamewali and Uch Sharif. The Bahawalpur Regional Police Officer Mushtaq Ali Sukhera confirmed that activists of former “jihadi or sectarian groups” had been arrested during these raids. He said those people had been taken into custody whose names figured on the Police’s fourth schedule, which carries the names of those people who violate their surety bonds of good behaviour and non-participation in objectionable activities. In case of non-compliance, they are liable to be detained or face new cases on these charges, he stated. Among those arrested were Abdul Ghani, a Sipah-e-Sahaba Pakistan (SSP) activist from Mauza Qaimpur near Hasilpur, Aamir Shahzad of Ahmedpur East and Habibur Rehman of Khairpur Tamewali, who was allegedly present on the premises of Lal Masjid in Islamabad when an operation was launched during the regime of Pervez Musharraf. 25 activists of a banned outfit were arrested during the crackdown in Vehari District. Sources said eight persons were arrested from Vehari and the rest from Mailsi and Burewala.

Budget Allocation for Uch Sharif Shirines

The budgetary allocation for Auqaf, Religious and Minority Affairs sector has been enhanced from Rs 100 million to Rs 375 million in the budget for 2009-10. Major initiatives include construction of Quran Complex at Upper Mall, re-flooring of Shahi Masjid, restoration of shrines of Uch Sharif and Hazrat Mian Mir, construction of washrooms, kitchens and dispensaries at shrines, documentation and preservation of historical, religious heritage monuments and provision of public facilities at shrine of Madhoo Lal Hussain. US Ambassador visits Uch Sharif to mark completion of Shrine conservation

UCH SHARIF, May 22 (APP) American Ambassador Anne W. Patterson Friday highlighting the value of preserving Pakistan’s “irreplaceable global heritage” said important places should be preserved at all cost. She was expressing her views during a visit to the shrine of Hazrat Jalaluddin Bukhari marking the completion of a US‑funded conservation project.

Ambassador Patterson said, “It is impossible to stand here and not be awed by the grandeur around me and the spirit of mysticism that envelops the area.”

She was greeted by Secretary Auqaf and Religious Affairs Qazi Afaaq and other officials when she arrived at the shrine.

The US provided $50,000 grant initiated in October 2007 under the Ambassadors Fund for Cultural Preservation, supported major repair work of the shrine including the replacement of all decayed wooden columns, beams and tile flooring.

“The exceptional architecture of this 15^th century shrine needs to be conserved, not only for the thousands of devotees who visit every year at the time of the Urs, but for future generations,” the Ambassador said.

Dignitaries and members of the Bahawalpur district administration were also present on the occasion.

A small town located 75 kilometers from Bahawalpur in the Punjab, Uch commands great reverence as a city of renowned Sufi saints.

The domed brick‑built shrine is decorated with glazed blue tiles in floral and geometric designs. The structure, including four other similar monuments forming a compound, is included on UNESCO’s World Heritage list.

In addition to Uch Sharif, the U.S. embassy has also funded the conservation of several projects in Pakistan including Sirkap Site and Jinnan Wali Dehri in Taxila; Masjid Mahabat Khan and Gor Khuttree, Peshawar; Maan Singh Haveli, Rohtas Fort; Alamgiri Gate, and the bazaar of the Wazir Khan Mosque in Lahore.

The US Ambassadors Fund for Cultural Preservation, established by Congress in 2001, provides direct grant support to cultural heritage projects around the world.

So the Fund has supported more than 500 projects worldwide, totaling more than $13.4 million.

21st century school in 16th century shrine

Sunday, May 03, 2009 By Khalid Khattak HE state of a primary school in Uch Sharif in Bahawalpur district exposes government’s claim that Southern Punjab is a priority for it as the school is without a building and is housed in a dilapidated 16th century tomb. The Government Arabic Primary School, Uch Sharif, Ahmedpur Sharqia tehsil, despite catering for over 250 students is housed in the tomb of Hazrat Musa Pak Shaheed. The rapidly deteriorating condition of the tomb has now compelled the administration to hold classes in courtyard of a nearby mosque or other adjacent open space near the ‘school’. During a visit to Uch Sharif, this correspondent observed that classes were being held in courtyard of the mosque. Students, however, seemed fairly content despite unfavourable conditions. One can imagine what a change a permanent building and comfortable learning environment could bring into the lives of these young learners. The innocent students mostly, clad in ‘khaki’ uniform and some even clad in colourful clothes were seen sitting on the bare floor in scorching heat. It is not hard to imagine what these youngsters must go through in winter. A comparison of the Government Arabic Primary School, Uch Sharif, with any public-sector school of a big city exposes the plight of students in far flung areas. According to one of the teachers, Syed Shamsuddin, the school had been functioning in the tomb of Hazrat Musa Pak Shaheed since July 19, 1947. Talking to The News, he said the school had 280 registered students, including 40 female students, while the total number of teachers was three. To a question, he said students were suffering as school had to be shifted from one place to another due to the unavailability of a proper building. He said classes were not being held in tomb these days as it was in a dilapidated condition. He said students had to study in a nearby open-space when people at the mosque did not allow holding of classes. “Some people think that noisy students in dirty clothes can violate the sanctity of the mosque”, he said. He said owing to extreme poverty, school teachers could not compel parents to send their children to school in uniform. He said the school had to be closed whenever it rained. He said more than three kanals of land owned by the Evacuee Trust Property Board (ETPB) was available near the ‘school’ and the government should ask board officials to give land to the school. Need of food, cloth, shelter more important, presently: Gilani BAHAWALPUR: Prime Minister Syed Yousaf Raza Gillani has reiterated his resolve to provide food, cloth and shelter to the masses and said that the need of the food, cloth and shelter was more than in the past. While addressing the groundbreaking ceremony of bridge at Jalalpur, Pirwala in Multan, Prime Minister Syed Yousaf Raza Gillani in his address in Saraiki dialect has said that power and portfolios have no importance for them, as these were worldly and temporarily things. “Government is committed on the agenda to serve the masses, “ he added. He expressed his pleasure that a ‘Dervish’ (simple hermit) like him was going to inaugurate the bridge, which would open a new corridor of development in the area, besides factories will be set up and local of the area will have jobs soon. “The construction of bridge also increase the property and land prices, “ he added. “The bride will serve better traveling facilities to the passengers by reducing both their time and distance, “ he said. Prime Minister said that the inhabitants of Jalalpur had already been facilitated with the Sui gas. “We are following the footsteps of late Benazir Bhutto i.e to serve the masses. Government has initiated Benazir Income Support Programme for the welfare of the poor persons. We have distributed 8000 forms to each MNA in this connection, “ he said, adding that government was also planning to provide poor families with health policy and insurance. Prime Minister further said that government wanted to give protection to the institutions, citing restoration of the judges besides also providing them salary packages. Earlier, the Prime Minister laid the foundation stone of new bridge linking Multan to Uch Sharif at Amanwala, Jalalpur Tehsil, situated some 100 kilometers away from Multan, Costing Rs.1.15 billion, which would will reduce the distance by 100 miles and save two hours of passengers traveling from Uch Sharif to Karachi and would be ready within time period of 18 months. Addressing the occasion, the State Minister for Communication, Imtiaz Safdar Warraich said that construction of 687 meters long bridge would reduce the traveling distance of Multan with the rest of the major cities and the bridge will have also 4.5 kilometer long approach. The bridge constructed over Sutlej River some 18 kilometers away from Jalalpur Pirwala. would link Jalalpur Pirwala with Uch Sharif. He further said that Lahore-Gujranwala section was also being transformed from four lanes to six lanes. Similarly, he said that dual line from Islamabad to Murree had already been completed and it would be further expanded to Muzaffarabad. “The upgradation of Karakoram Highway is also in progress, “ he added. While the work on the Islamabad-Peshawar Motorway M-1, Islamabad Motorway M-2, Pindi Bhattian-Faisalabad Motorway M-3 and Karachi Northern Bypass M-10 and Faisalabad-Multan Motorway M-4 will also be likely to start soon

Folk Festival "Mela Uch Sharif"

Uch Sharif: The mela (Folk Festival) is held in March/April. This year, mela started from 6th April, 2009 which is week long celebration and will continue till April 12, 2009. A large number of people from Southern Punjab come to the historic town Uch Sharif to pay homage to the great sufi saints of Uch Sharif. The mela is held to mark the historic congregation of sufi saints i.e. Hazrat Jalal ud Din Surkhposh Bukhari, Hazrat Farid ud Din Ganj Shakar, Hazrat Lal Shahbaz Qalandar and Hazrat Baha-ud-Din Zakrai Multani R.A, which was observed in 600 A.D, on the invitation of Hazrat Jalal ud Din Surkhposh Bukhari R.A. It is the old tradition of the centuries that people visit the shirne of Hazrat Jalal ud Din Surkhposh Bukhari and Hazrat Mehboob Subhani and other saints of Uch Sharif. Majority of the pilgrims and devotees of sufi saints spend all the day at the shirines and offer Friday Prayer at the historical Mosques. The participants, town people, visitors, devotees make folk dances, enjoy themselves Circus & traditional sports and play differnt traditional games. Traditional bazaars are set up, makeshift zoo, Death Well, Death Ring, Lucky Irani Circus, China Circus, Professor Shows, Magic Shows, Wait Lifting, tarzen swings for young children which increase joys of the people. In the older days, when the communication means were very poor, people used to stayed in town for more than a week to enjoy the mela but with the advent in transportation and communication means, the environment of the entire Folk Festival has changed. Now visitors return to their houses a night. Govt.of the Punjab was not willing to conduct the mela this year becuase of the security risks and prevalent terrorism wave which is heading towards the Southern Punjab. But latter on, Govt of Punjab allowed special permission to conduct the same by doing strict security measures. Inhabitants of the town are thankful to the Chief Minister for allowing special permission and providing additional security for taking personal interest in conducting recreational mela .

Repairs at bridge begin

BAHAWALPUR, Feb 15: The Punjab government has initiated repairs of the bridge over Head Panjnad near Uch Sharif, about 100 kms from here. One killed as riots erupt in DG Khan

One person was killed and eight injured Friday during protests in the town of Uch Sharif, 60 kilometres south of Dera Ghazi Khan, police said. The violence erupted after 70 to 80 Shia took to the streets and threw stones at the shops of Sunni traders. “Sunni traders also threw stones at Shia protesters and in the scuffle one person was killed and eight others wounded,” local police official Azhar Hameed told AFP, adding police had brought the situation under control. A rally to condemn D. G Khan suicide attack was also taken out from Jamia Mosque Jaferia Uch Sharif. The rally marched past from Sarafa Bazaar. The participants of the rally scuffled with the workers of the banned organization due to which one person named Bashir Ahmad died and five other injured.

Fresh fall in cotton prices

In the absence of buying interest from mills, the local cotton market recorded a fresh fall in prices when trading resumed on Tuesday. With growing economic uncertainty the worldwide and liquidity crunch faced by the spinners owing to little off-take of yarn and fabric, the cotton market remained lacklustre. Floor brokers said that growing concern about economic instability and worldwide and domestic crises depressed sentiment where activity remained restricted to a small buying lot. The following transaction materialised on ready counter on Tuesday: 2,000 bales from Uch Sharif done at Rs2,850
